En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, ils se caract\u00e9risent par une faible \u00e9nergie de surface.<br \/>Cette caract\u00e9ristique concerne beaucoup de mat\u00e9riaux polym\u00e8res (plastiques) comme le montre le tableau suivant qui exprime l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie de surface en mN\/m (ou dynes) ou en angle de contact d\u2019une goutte d\u2019eau. Le plus souvent, il s\u2019agit d\u2019air comprim\u00e9.<br \/>Dans un premier temps, le gaz a subi une ionisation partielle par le biais d\u2019une d\u00e9charge \u00e9lectrique. Le plus souvent, cette d\u00e9charge \u00e9lectrique se produit entre 2 \u00e9lectrodes reli\u00e9es \u00e0 un g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur d\u00e9livrant de l\u2019\u00e9nergie \u00e9lectrique sous haute tension. Cette ionisation conf\u00e8re au gaz, initialement chimiquement inactif, une activit\u00e9 chimique disponible pendant une courte dur\u00e9e. Elle est mise \u00e0 profit dans le deuxi\u00e8me temps du processus, lorsque le gaz est souffl\u00e9 et mis en contact avec la surface \u00e0 activer. Les modifications de surface prennent la forme de radicaux chimiques greff\u00e9s en extr\u00eame surface. Suffisant pour favoriser l\u2019adh\u00e9rence, le taux de greffage est suffisamment faible pour que la nature chimique de la surface ne soit quasiment pas modifi\u00e9e.
